Hair Dressing

December 8th 2009 12:49
rose comb

Sometimes a hat is too much. However, plain old hair just doesn't seem right with the lovely 50's inspired floral dresses that are all about this summer. For those of you who lie awake at night and ponder this fashion dilemma, there is a solution - glammed-up hair combs.

As you can see from the Maria Elena version above, you can have a gorgeous floral arrangement in your hair quite easily, as the artificial flowers are simply secured to a trusty old hair comb. They are quite makeable (is that a word) really and if I could just set aside my children, house, job and cat for a day, I might even attempt to create my own.

Lotus lulu

Why stop at flowers - Lotus Lulu hasn't, hers are a fabulous gathering of butterflies. Blue Marmalade has designed hers with beads.

If the whole hair corsage thing is a bit much for you, just a few decorated bobby pins a la Emily Wootton, might be more your style.

Slouchin'

January 8th 2009 11:15
Brooklyn Tweed

If ever there was a hat style that flattered the masses, it has to be the slouch beanie - currently worn by the masses. I guarantee, after scrolling through the slouch images in this post, even the most devout hat atheist will be reconsidering their position on the subject.

throughtheloops

Slouch beanies fall graciously around the head, rather than clamp around the skull, so face shapes remain unaltered and even hair is moderately unaffected by the hat's grasp. (This kills off the 'Hat Hair' argument which would be the aforementioned atheist's prime reason for not getting involved).

victorias secret slouch

Even a quick surf through Victoria's Secret will reveal a delightful portrayal of the style - how could you not love this? And it doesn't have to be bleating cold either to wear these hats - this girl is obviously out on a spring fling.

If you feel you need to have one quickly, Cupcakes Cards and Gifts has the one above or you might like Random Screaming's version:

To be honest, they are not difficult to knit, so if you have some spare yarn and initiative head on over to Brooklyn Tweed and check out Jared's patterns (the opening image is his) or simply google 'slouch knitting pattern' and see them appear. I have bookmarked a few that I intend to produce over the next few months.

And my parting comment, if Lindsay's wearing one, then I guess we all will be sooner or later .............

knit knee socks

Quite often a fashion trend comes along, to which I say, 'Forget that!' and then very soon down the track find myself wearing it with pride. By the look of things, these new knee socks could fall into this category. When I first spotted them on Carrie

I just couldn't warm to them, but now, some six months later and having seen them around I can imagine they will be a good thing this coming Autumn instead of tights.

cette knee socks

Obviously, they will need to be worn with short skirts - or (gulp) shorts - yes, and thighs are going to be a feature.

pixie geldof

Pixie Geldof certainly manages to make a feature of them - not sure if I'll be running with the electric blue boots though.

Anyway, as we sit back and watch this fashion trend make its mark on the coming season, I don't think anyone will be able to pull the look off quite so appealingly as this icon.

Fingerless Fashion

bike arm warmers

Gauntlets, arm warmers, wristlets, fingerless mittens - they are all happening right now in just about any colour or textile you care to mention. I have been looking at this trend for some time and not really noticing it. As these things happen, it suddenly came to me - I want some too, so let's see what there is out there

Summer Scarves

October 15th 2008 11:06
all saints

A slight contradiction of terms, the Summer Scarf, really is the go right now. We tend to think of wrapping ourselves in scarves to ward off the winter chills, but tossing a floaty floral around one's neck to keep the sun at bay is the summer equivalent. You will have no trouble locating a scarf as the accessory departments of every fashion store are bursting with them. There are no rules either - long, short, silky, paisley, tasseled, whatever - you just need to keep the out fit underneath very simple. Mostly worn with plain tanks and tees -and of course the staple jean

Green Belt

naughty agapanthus belt

Need to reinvent your jeans this season? An easy and inexpensive way to do this is to join the fabric belt trend happening right now. With the current foho, homesy, artsy look all about, adding a fabric belt can be your contribution to this fashion theme. No need to put much thought into the rest of your outfit, because these belts are usually the whole statement - just add a tank or tee that coordinates and a long line cardi if it's chilly

Stole-n

Australian Summer Stole

I'm sure you're all soaring the same dizzy heights that I am over this long-pined for spring weather. (Did you wear something today that exposed your legs making words like lumpy and white come to mind? Yes, me too. Don't worry, there is still time for treadmills and sunless lotions.) Even though the days have been balmy, there are still the afternoon snaps and cold nights to be considered. We really have moved beyond jumpers and coats, but still need something to navigate us through these cold spots to Summer. Currently, there are some gorgeous stoles, shawls and capelets around which will do the trick.

Get Waisted

Miss Sixty

Creating a waist this season is a cinch - cinch belt that is. Hitting our accessory stands with a vengence are cinching belts in all shapes and colours, so there is bound to be one (or two) to take your fancy. Cinch belts were the defining fashion detail in the 80's, but thank goodness this time around they have been designed with far more imagination than the wide black elastic bands that we ahem, people who lived in the eighties, had to clip around their shirt dresses. Now they are a total fashion feature and the dilemma is choice

Floppy Hats

August 14th 2008 11:50
my floppy hat

Flattering on anyone, the floppy hat is back and big for Spring/Summer 08. So, not to be left behind I have already made mine (above). I used this pattern from Amy Butler and in the vein of Scarlett O'Hara, the fabric I used was a vintage curtain (1970's I think judging by the orange flower power). Overall, I am happy with the result, but now I really need a plain chocolate or burnt orange sundress to wear it with

sjp corsage

Hot on the heels of Carrie's Manolos, is the much loved trend we touched on about four years ago - the corsage. Do you remember the lily hairclips through the updos or the glittery roses we snapped up at Portmans? Well I do, and I loved it so I'm thrilled to see its reappearance for this coming season
