Summer Scarves

October 15th 2008 11:06
all saints

A slight contradiction of terms, the Summer Scarf, really is the go right now. We tend to think of wrapping ourselves in scarves to ward off the winter chills, but tossing a floaty floral around one's neck to keep the sun at bay is the summer equivalent. You will have no trouble locating a scarf as the accessory departments of every fashion store are bursting with them. There are no rules either - long, short, silky, paisley, tasseled, whatever - you just need to keep the out fit underneath very simple. Mostly worn with plain tanks and tees -and of course the staple jean.

This is one trend you may not even have to shop for, as I'm sure like me, you have a ton of scarves buried deeply to be unearthed for this coming season. For those who simply must have a 'new' one, go hunt down a vintage piece on ebay or the thrift shops. This one is up for auction on ebay - a retro Lanvin.

You may think I'm nuts, but I actually love the vintage souvenir scarves of the 1950's and 60's like these:

It's amazing how a lightweight scarf really does boost an outfit, and turn an every day t-shirt look into something quite chic.

Even the knit scarf has its place this summer, so long as the colours are light and the fibres are cotton, linen, silk, rayon etc.

I have to admit, I have shopped and this is my new SS - only $9.95 at Sportsgirl.

Green Belt

naughty agapanthus belt

Need to reinvent your jeans this season? An easy and inexpensive way to do this is to join the fabric belt trend happening right now. With the current foho, homesy, artsy look all about, adding a fabric belt can be your contribution to this fashion theme. No need to put much thought into the rest of your outfit, because these belts are usually the whole statement - just add a tank or tee that coordinates and a long line cardi if it's chilly.

For a gorgeous selection (like the one above) Amy Schwab is worth checking out. She has them in a multitude of fabric designs.

Keggy

Keggy's range are made from silk with a lovely large buckle. They are also reversible, for that extra bit of value. If you like the silk look, you can even improvise and find a lengthy vintage silk scarf and simply run it through your belt loops and knot at the hip.

Big Buckle

If you have the urge to make your own, Juicy Bits has a fantastic tutorial for you to follow so you can make one like this:

and for those of you who simply must own the orange and green number that appears first, well go to my shop and you'll find her there, along with her sisters and cousins.

Stole-n

Australian Summer Stole

I'm sure you're all soaring the same dizzy heights that I am over this long-pined for spring weather. (Did you wear something today that exposed your legs making words like lumpy and white come to mind? Yes, me too. Don't worry, there is still time for treadmills and sunless lotions.) Even though the days have been balmy, there are still the afternoon snaps and cold nights to be considered. We really have moved beyond jumpers and coats, but still need something to navigate us through these cold spots to Summer. Currently, there are some gorgeous stoles, shawls and capelets around which will do the trick.

shawl

If you are having difficulty with the 'senior' connotations of the shawl, have a look at these from Las Lopez Las, a South American crafter, who can really turn them out with style. The Barroque red shawl here is made from a combination of silk and merino wool and could almost be worn as a piece of art.

Helana Margareta has made this one with alpaca and silk yarns which would make it incredibly warm but very light on the shoulders.

And, Capelets are all around us - ha ha. For designer girls, Stella McCartney has created these,

but for a more casual look, Homelab has these

If the first image is still burning in your mind, yes it's stunning isn't it? Made by Ellita it is just one of the most beautiful range of stoles, shawls and capelets that I have seen in a very long time. As a knitter, I love to see the craft taken to couture level and Ellita has done just that. Here's another pic to inspire your new wardrobe accessory.

Get Waisted

Miss Sixty

Creating a waist this season is a cinch - cinch belt that is. Hitting our accessory stands with a vengence are cinching belts in all shapes and colours, so there is bound to be one (or two) to take your fancy. Cinch belts were the defining fashion detail in the 80's, but thank goodness this time around they have been designed with far more imagination than the wide black elastic bands that we ahem, people who lived in the eighties, had to clip around their shirt dresses. Now they are a total fashion feature and the dilemma is choice

Floppy Hats

my floppy hat

Flattering on anyone, the floppy hat is back and big for Spring/Summer 08. So, not to be left behind I have already made mine (above). I used this pattern from Amy Butler and in the vein of Scarlett O'Hara, the fabric I used was a vintage curtain (1970's I think judging by the orange flower power). Overall, I am happy with the result, but now I really need a plain chocolate or burnt orange sundress to wear it with

sjp corsage

Hot on the heels of Carrie's Manolos, is the much loved trend we touched on about four years ago - the corsage. Do you remember the lily hairclips through the updos or the glittery roses we snapped up at Portmans? Well I do, and I loved it so I'm thrilled to see its reappearance for this coming season
