Floppy Hats
August 14th 2008 11:50
Flattering on anyone, the floppy hat is back and big for Spring/Summer 08. So, not to be left behind I have already made mine (above). I used this pattern from Amy Butler and in the vein of Scarlett O'Hara, the fabric I used was a vintage curtain (1970's I think judging by the orange flower power). Overall, I am happy with the result, but now I really need a plain chocolate or burnt orange sundress to wear it with.
Floppy hats did make their debut last season, but this year straw is the way to go. Oscar de la Renta's black number above is so elegant. If you prefer a more casual straw, then these two from Urban Outfitters are what you need to be seeking out.
Floppy hats are also appearing on catwalks in denim a la Marc Jacobs:
and have also been interpreted in satin. This image from the Rodarte collection is one of my favorites and really evokes a feeling of elegance.
Many of you may be heading off soon for a Spring break in warmer parts, so you'll be able to get some early wear out of your floppy. Really, the style is the bigger the better. So, as you lounge poolside, keep Samantha in mind and you'll have this look nailed.
