Gracing Our Shores

grazia launch issue

Instead of a latte and muffin this week, invest your $5 in the Australian launch issue of Grazia magazine - your wardrobe and your waistline will be glad you did. Grazia, originally published in Italy in 1938 and then the UK version in 2005, has provided the Europeans with a great insight into the latest looks. Finally we have our own counterpart, and after flicking through it at school pick up and later in greater detail in the bath last night, my conclusion is, lucky us.

Published as a weekly, it is positioned to compete with Famous and Ok, and the quality of the fashion and the articles surpasses both easily. I guess the best way to describe Grazia would be a pared down version of Vogue.

High fashion magazines can by quite intimidating for those of us who put 'Home Duties' down as our occupation. Often the fashion shoots are so 'out there' we deem them unreachable and so dismiss them as irrelevant to our lives. Conversely, that patronising tone that comes across in mass market weeklies can be equally alienating, especially those that suggest we wear 'coordinates'. Grazia really hits the mark as stock is represented from Kenzo to Target (boho top on p16 for $39.99 -might need to pay a visit) and while the shoots are bold, it's easy to pick out the trends. If you're into it, there is plenty of celebrity goss, which is thankfully tempered with a few articles on issues of greater significance ie Zimbabwe, but I suppose we all reach a point in our day when Angelina's and her twins is about as much as we can take in.

For those of you who want greater fashion detail, their supporting website gives you current catwalk images, beauty etc. If this mag really takes your fancy, it may be worth your while to take up their subscription offer of $199 for 50 issues. For all of us, however, the overriding advantage of this new publication is that we will now have something decent to occupy us at the checkout queue.
