Of the Cuff

September 18th 2008 11:55
Holly Hawk cuff

Never one to be an advocate of statement jewellery, I am surprised by my sudden smitteness(?) with Holly Hawk's range of leather cuffs, so much so that I think I will need to own one very shortly. Cuff bracelets have been happening recently, but largely ignored by me due to indifference to chunkiness. Holly Hawk has suddenly ignited my interest, so having done some research for us, I have to say there are some lovely cuffies out there waiting to be worn.

Taneesis shop cuff

Taneesi's braided copper bracelet is a lovely example of a cuff that could be worn with a smart work suit or a pair of jeans and a plain white tee. Incredibly it retails for only US$29.99, so it could be winging its way to you from California quite easily.

topshop cuff

This one from Topshop might inspire you if you are a silver girl. I think I might feel a bit wonder-womanish wearing this one.

tiger lilly shop

Tiger Lilly has made the tree landscape cuff bracelet to remind us of our roots (sorry) - a lovely cuff that would be like sporting a piece of art.

I did a quick search on ebay and a ton of cuffs appeared. After trawling for a few minutes, this one caught my eye:
ebay cuff

If you're one for rocks (gems), ebay is really worth a look because I noticed masses with turquoise, amethyst and other semi-precious stones embedded within them.

For the more practical of us, the Contexture Design Workshop has created the Coffee Cuff - a bracelet you can simply whip off and slide onto your Starbucks. Crafted from reclaimed veneer, you can be ecofriendly and stylish at the same time - we'll just overlook the disposable cup for now.

Open Heart Splurgery

August 26th 2008 12:55
heart locket bracelet

No pun intended, but something that has always been very close to my heart is the locket. I think it might appeal to the secretive side of my nature - the closed treasure holding the image of a mystery lover or a secret friend. Soldiers took them to war, opening them in private moments in the trenches to gaze at loved ones.

Traditonally, they were oval or rectangular but it is the heart shaped locket that always take my eye. I remember the little rose gold heart lockets with bluebirds on the front, worn by some lucky girls at school that I secretly coveted. So now that I am a big girl, I can have my own, and what a choice there is.

dedication

This one is part of a charm bracelet called Dedication and you can find it here.

silver raven

Botanical Bird has made this silver raven locket, if like me, you have a soft spot for birds and lockets.

NM Ball locket

Neiman Marcus is selling these ball lockets if you are not a tradionalist, but love the idea.

From a fashion perspective, the way to wear lockets right now, is dangled on the end of a long chain sitting just below the ribs, and not always as a solitary piece but part of a collection of other charms. If you walk into any Diva store right now, you will find a huge selection of quite large lockets on very long chains. (I don't have much luck with Diva however, because the few things I have purchased from them have quickly fallen apart - I think price has a lot to do with it - fast fashion, fast jewellery).

mermaid treasures lockets

For something really special, go hunting on ebay and search 'vintage lockets' - you will be amazed how reasonable it can be to pick up a genuine original. I love this Moose locket that is on US ebay right now.

I hope this post prompts you to go sorting through your old jewellery box to unearth your forgotten locket so it can spend some time being part of the 2008 locket resurgence.

Autumn Charm

August 10th 2008 13:13
autumn

WARNING: If you have spent your fashion budget for this week, do not read any further as uncontrolled splurging may result....

In the closing stages of winter, I find myself a little over the sombre greys, charcoal and black that Melbournians shroud themselves in throughout this season, but feel it's a little too premature to break out the spring palette. The autumnal tones, bronze, copper and gold offer a welcome change, and even a few accessories in these hues will lift our winter spirits. I have a particular fondness for charm bracelets, so here is a little overview of what's on offer in these tones, to get you through to spring.

Alyson1234 has crafted the beautiful collection above, the coffee freshwater pearls really caught my eye. You could trot out anything in burnt orange from your wardrobe to go with this for an instant rich colorburst.

bronze autumn

Look for the green tones in your knitwear, blouses and Tees to match up with this Tassie Washie creation. There are so many shades here, just take a moment to examine it.

bronze key

Daisuki's Bronze Charm bracelet, lets you incorporate the turquoise shades into your outfit. I'm noticing a lot of 'mysterious' items appearing on charm bracelets lately, like the old key - a lovely old world feel.

pretty sweet designs

The white and translucent beads in Pretty Sweet Design's charm bracelet, offers a lighter take on the autumn mix and would work beautifully with the casual look of denim, white tee or shirt. These toggle clasps really appeals to me.

ooak

If you are a flaunter, then Silver Tongue Devil's charm bling will take your fancy. Eclectic, free form, vintage and indian glass are terms used to describe this beauty and for only US$32, I think this is great value.

There are days however, where it takes something far more powerful than a colour change to get me through, and this bracelet from Poet Summer says it perfectly.

These days I like to do my jewellery shopping at Etsy. It's a feel good way to buy your bling because you are supporting independent craftspeople AND the prices are incredibly reasonable
