Lounging not Sleeping
July 17th 2008 12:56
When exactly was it that pyjama bottoms became lounge pants? Until recently, pyjamas were designed and sold as a matching set - coat and pants. Now, we are marketed 'lounge pants' and left to select our own coordinating top to wear them with. The only design change I see is that the elastic waist has been replaced with a drawstring - this must be the distinguishing feature that separates the two.
Even the good old Avon Lady is out of her jammies and into her pink loungers.
So what constitutes lounging? In the past when we snuggled into our jammie pants, it was with the understanding that we were heading off to bed - but these lounge pants can be worn 'around'. Does this mean past the mailbox? Can you visit the milkbar in your loungers? Can lounge pants cover the same territory as tracksuit pants? Clearly, we need some direction here.
Don't get me wrong, I am very enthused about lounge pants. In fact, when I want to feel like a 1930's movie star, I swan around in my Amy Butler's (they only took an evening to sew).
Let's hope that our jammies are not being made redundant, because ''Bananas in Loungers' just doesn't really cut it.
