Make the Shift
July 16th 2008 13:04
Inspired by Leslie, I purchased this pattern at the beginning of the winter season. Pardon the pun, but this shift dress was simplicity itself to make. I skipped the pocket and the hem trim, shortened it a few inches and produced a winter staple that has taken me from parent teacher interviews to dinner with friends. Having experienced a number of dressmaking disasters in the past sacrificing expensive fabric, I used thrifted houndstooth fabric in a camel/chocolate colourway. Here is the result pictured with my favorite winter boots (last winter's in fact).
The next one, in a steel grey corduroy, is still at the cut out stage on my sewing bench. It will be worn with something purple underneath and the same boots- outfit still in concept stage.
Being quite understated, this shift is the perfect outfit to bring out the fishnets for. Fishnets, worn with anything mini, leathery or leopardy can be a style limiting move, but peeping out of boots under this number is a clever look. Just a tip, buy your fishnets at Safeway, they last just as long as the department store brands and they will definitely add style to your trolley.
