I Kid You Not

Never in the fashion scene, has there been a better time to wear 'sensible' dresses as there is now. Anything floral, floaty or forties is just the ticket - and who better to head straight to for a fix of this fashion type, the vintage queen hereself- Cath Kidston. Cath stocks a gorgeous range of vintage skirts, blouses, dresses and knits, that will have you sorting your ration coupons or knitting for the war effort in no time.

Cath also does a beautiful range for children. In typical english style, this includes macs and wellies! If you like the vintage look but are not ready to dress yourself in it, you can certainly get your home into the spirt, as Cath has 'vintaged' just about every household item you can name including the washing up brush.

Her range of fabric is divine - here's a favorite of mine:

So while you head on over to Cath for a browse, I'll be over in a minute - I just have to straigten the seams on my stockings.

Orla Orla!

One day, when I am a rich girl, I will be entirely decked out in Orla Kiely. This will also include my kitchen

pear mug

You see, I'm quite sure Orla had me in mind when she designed her gorgeous bags, clothes and homewares, but she forgot that I'm not earning a six figure income. Never mind, her wares are still lovely eye candy and provide masses of inspiration for a bag maker like moi.

I am thoroughly enjoying the mid-century revival in fashion and interior design (maybe because I was around for it the first time), and Orla has created such a lovely fresh take on the graphic prints and angular lines that typified this period. Her design must be bang on because my mum hates it.

Now as you know, I am not one to let high price tags conquer me, so I have done a bit of ebay research and found that in the US and UK, there are some Orla bargains to be had. This dress for example. If you intend to bid, be prepared for some stiff competition (it's on ebayUK)

Fortunately, Orla has joined other designers in an effort to bring tasteful goods to the masses, and has produced a range of bags and homewares for Target UK and US. These are very affordable, but again, you'll need to go hunting on Ebay for them.

With all of that said, for those of you in the Northern Hemi, here is a hat that you'll be bound to be noticed in during the coming months, and for those of us in the South, make a mental note of this image, you'll be needing one in three months.

Big on Boden

boden kaftan

With the sudden influx of UK families here on the Mornington Peninsula, I have had the opportunity to talk fashion to Northern Hemisphere girls. A common lament from them has been that they have had to leave their beloved Boden store behind. Intrigued by a fashion label that evokes such passion in a group of like-minded women, I had to check it out. So after a quick surf, I became a convert.

Boden coats

I have always gravitated toward clothing that is a little bit fun and Boden tends to have this edge, their skirts in particular.

boden skirts

The other big plus for Boden is that the entire range is wearable. They are the sort of clothes you can easily put together as a day to day wardrobe whether you are a working girl or a house schlep like moi!.

boden dresses

Keeping in mind that we basically have to double, plus a bit the British Pound, these are not cheap buys, so I am waiting for the SALE, which will I guess be in July. In the meantime, I have scored some trial pieces on Ebay UK and they are going straight into my winter wardrobe, as the Brits have just finished with theirs. I have to say the quality is fantastic ie the skirts are fully lined and everything is well stitched. They also use great fabric.

Boden summer

If you simply must have new, there is a small SALE page on their site. I registered for their catalogue, which you can do on the site and when it arrived I had a good hour's read. The catalogue is very well presented and worth keeping to refer to. It also seems that each range builds onto or coordinates well with the next one, so each piece you buy is bound to be an 'investment piece' (there you are, I have just given you the justification you need as well).

As winter rolls on, I shall be keeping this image in the back of my mind for Summer 2010 in Australia .....(hope they still have them left when the sale starts)

Sleeping with Victoria

January 25th 2009 11:46
eyelet

It recently occurred to me that my sleepwear was very style-challenged. Sagging nighties and washed out t-shirts do not make for chic evenings. So, with email news of the sale I logged onto Victoria's Secret and ordered away. Even though the Australian dollar is not as strong against the US dollar as is was last year, with the heavy discounts that VS give, online shopping there is still very worthwhile. My order has arrived and I would have photographed myself in the items for you, but it was just as easy to use the images from VS themselves. In any case, had I not said anything you probably would not have noticed the difference

Calling all Alannah Girls

Ruby Valentine

My very stylish friend, Carol, tapped me on the shoulder at a recent soiree and gave me the business card of a cute little fashion house based in Brisbane - Sex Kitten, that she had been swishing about in during her recent northern getaway. Never to ignore a snippet this lady passes on, I visited the site and discovered a lovely little boutique of Alannah-like creations at a fraction of the price

TopShop-ing

July 26th 2008 12:04
kate moss pansy dress

While the UK continues to unleash cutting edge design onto the fashion market, there is none the less, something distinctly comforting in basic British fashion design. You can always rely on them to provide you with a floral tea dress, a pretty skirt, some mary jane T-bars and a quality cardi. TopShop has been a reliable source of both for many years, and at reasonable prices. TopShop has branched out into other European countries and the US, but unfortunately has not made the journey south, so we have had to watch with envy, Trinny and Susannah marching their fashion-rescues into the store and loading them up with items we long to get our hands on

Secret's Out

July 13th 2008 12:28
Mini Caftan Dress

This is what I intend to be wearing a lot this summer - a gorgeous caftan dress. I can see myself throwing it over my bathers when I've had enough of the beach day rays but the children still want to stay and play. I think this dress will also accompany me on the countless supermarket visits I make. Now the best thing about it is that it's from the current Victoria's Secret Summer 2008 range, style we will be sporting in six months time. I have purchased it (and a number of other pieces.....) on sale, because this US company is currently having its summer clearance. So, if you feel like getting the jump on this summer's look at end of season prices, go here and see what you can find
