Calling all Alannah Girls

October 19th 2008 10:29
Ruby Valentine

My very stylish friend, Carol, tapped me on the shoulder at a recent soiree and gave me the business card of a cute little fashion house based in Brisbane - Sex Kitten, that she had been swishing about in during her recent northern getaway. Never to ignore a snippet this lady passes on, I visited the site and discovered a lovely little boutique of Alannah-like creations at a fraction of the price.

Lola

On closer inspection, Sex Kitten's range could almost be described as a caricature of Alannah's fashion image. All very corseted, bustiered, bows and lace. Even so, the designs are very cute, fun fabrics and loads of detail.

The lingerie is very enticing, with a huge range to select from, (I must remember to ask Carol what she actually bought.)

The online shop is simple to navigate and all in aussie dollars so with the current crash/crunch whatever you want to call it, you know exactly what you are spending.

So, if you need something special for 'The Cup', maybe you should take a look - not sure though if my backyard would be the right back drop for the starlet corset though, hmmmm.

A TOAST to style

August 27th 2008 12:25
toast girl

This morning the postman really delivered.

Waiting in the mailbox for me was the Toast Autumn/Winter 2008 catalogue. As a consequence, I am about to launch into a fashion rave of gigantic proportion here, so those of you who are not interested in hearing about gorgeous clothes, spectacular imagery and classy classics click away now. For those remaining, sit back and feast your eyes....

living room

Toast is a UK fashion company catering for customers online as well as from bricks and mortar. If you are currently around the districts of Bath, Harrogate, Oxford, Notting Hill and Islington, all I can say is - lucky you. You will be able to see this collection in the flesh. However, all is not lost for the rest of us, as a browse through this current catalogue is a lovely experience - even the paper smells nice!

city girl

To put this collection in a descriptive nutshell, I would have to say it embodies a utilitarian, yet elegant pared down look, which simultaneously incorporates the key elements of current fashion trend. (do you know how long it took me to create that sentence?)

Step

I can visualise myself wearing everything in this range, which either means the stylists are very clever or I need a reality check (close friends, please do not email a response to this).

catalogue

The themes running through the catalogue are earthy, vintage and chic with subtle country overtones - all of which will win me everytime. While I am as easily seduced by the big glamour model look as the next girl, there is something that really speaks to me from an image of a girl slicing apples in the the kitchen, a la:

And for god's sake, they've even photographed a model consumed in my favorite pastime:

magazine browsing

After seeing this page, the children are definitely getting scones for their playlunch tommorrow.

scones

This is 147 pages of utter eye candy and if you want your own copy just go here and fill in your details.

Library

Now can't you imagine how beautifully our lockets we discussed yesterday would go with all of these outfits?

Piano

I must say, it has made me a bit of a wanty-want now, and here are the three things on the top of my wish list. (You can order online, but as I've mentioned in the past, make sure you understand the exchange rate of British pounds - this is not cheap fashion, but it is classic.)

Nole heels

Alina pants

Lissa dress

So with all of that off my chest, I'm off to spend some quality time here:

TopShop-ing

kate moss pansy dress

While the UK continues to unleash cutting edge design onto the fashion market, there is none the less, something distinctly comforting in basic British fashion design. You can always rely on them to provide you with a floral tea dress, a pretty skirt, some mary jane T-bars and a quality cardi. TopShop has been a reliable source of both for many years, and at reasonable prices. TopShop has branched out into other European countries and the US, but unfortunately has not made the journey south, so we have had to watch with envy, Trinny and Susannah marching their fashion-rescues into the store and loading them up with items we long to get our hands on.

Until now. The good news is, TopShop has become an online store that services Australia! Finally we have access to those lovely items the UK girls have taken for granted.

Before we all get too excited, let's just take a moment to consider the reality of price in terms of our exchange rate. Currently, the British Pound is equivalent to approx $2.30 Australian dollars, so the £40 floral dress is going to cost you roughly $83. To assist you, use this currency converter, and it will make the maths easy. The most economical way to secure your fashion from TopShop is to shop their Sale or Last Chance To Buy categories. The advantage here is that you will be buying fashion at the end of the Northern Hemisphere season, just in time to greet our new season.

If price is still bothering you, let me tell you how I navigate the issue. One of the greatest features of TopShop is that they accept PayPal. If you're an ebayer you already know about it, but put simply, PayPal is an online secure bank account that lets you accept and transfer funds. I keep a good kitty by selling my unwanted household stuff on ebay and accepting the proceeds into my Paypal account. When I'm ready to shop TopShop, the funds are there to splash out with! Similarly, If shipping cost is a concern, order with a friend and split it.

fashion forecast

While you are touring TopShop, you may like to register for the Fashion Forcast. TopShop will send you an email like the one above, on a regular basis to give you a snapshop of what is ahead - quite good if you don't have time to trawl through magazines.

If I haven't lured you there by now, maybe this will trigger your interest - TopShop has its own exclusive Kate Moss Collection. Yes, you too can have the It girl look. I'll leave you with these images to ponder...

Secret's Out

July 13th 2008 12:28
Mini Caftan Dress

This is what I intend to be wearing a lot this summer - a gorgeous caftan dress. I can see myself throwing it over my bathers when I've had enough of the beach day rays but the children still want to stay and play. I think this dress will also accompany me on the countless supermarket visits I make. Now the best thing about it is that it's from the current Victoria's Secret Summer 2008 range, style we will be sporting in six months time. I have purchased it (and a number of other pieces.....) on sale, because this US company is currently having its summer clearance. So, if you feel like getting the jump on this summer's look at end of season prices, go here and see what you can find
