Shooz and Sox

socks and heels

Yes, this is apparently how we are to be wearing our heels this summer. Not necessarily multi-striped with bronze, but the concept is ankle socks with pretty heels.

Zac Posen 2009

Just so you know I'm not pulling your leg (ha), here is Zac Posen's contribution to the look for 2009. There is merit in this trend however - no blisters when your feet make their entrance into summer footwear, chipped nail varnish is a hidden detail and if your fake tan is accenting your ankle bones and ridges - not a worry.

agyness deyn socks

If you are one who strives to emulate Aggy Deyn's look, then you'll be scouring the shops for brogues to team with your haemoglobin Red Robins.

knit sox and heels

As a sock-knitter, I am actually applauding this trend, because now our intricate work will be on display for the world to see and not shoved into some snow-boot somewhere.

This is by no means a fleeting trend. Judging by the northern hem's runways, this is how we will be by Autumn 2009

and this will be us in Winter
kidston sox

And just an aside - judging by the number of porn sites that came up when I Googled 'ankle socks and high heels', we are going to be getting a lot of attention this season....

Russell Crowe Eat Your Heart Out

July 22nd 2008 13:23
dior extreme gladiator

Who would have thought that Russell Crowe could be responsible for the biggest fashion shoe statement made by Carrie Bradshaw on the big screen this season? I'm talking about the 2000 epic movie Gladiator, and glamour sandal worn by SJP of course - made the connection? Dior certainly got big bangs for their bucks as Carrie trotted from scene to scene in the Extreme Gladiator (above) in all its incarnations -even a gold pair with THE wedding dress. If you are feeling some gladiator envy you can bag your very own pair for US$1500, currently on ebay.

Gladiators made their debut last season, but will be huge for Summer 2008. Speaking as someone who carries a 2 year old, groceries and a laundry basket (not always at once), I am thrilled to hear this. As soon as the weather warms up I will certainly be slipping into a pair, not the extremes above, but these mother-friendly designs.

Apart from looking edgy, these sandals are actually totally practical. Buckling around your ankle, there is no danger of that disgusting habit mules of the past had of flying off mid stride. Despite all the buckles, many of these styles actually zip up at the back, so it's easy on and away. As a parent, I am always about to enter a battle arena, so now my feet will look the part.
snakeskin

I do think though, that we all need a special pair in the wardrobe for the odd night out. While I'm not suggesting you rush out and pay Dior prices, you can get great 'likenesses' out there for around $100, they will be everywhere by September.

Some points to remember when 'going gladiator' this summer: short legs need low simple designs and if you feel your legs are not going to handle this look, they look wonderful with skinny (slim leg) jeans. They do come in white patent, but think carefully here. Lastly, pedicures need to be monitored as chipped toes protruding through leather strips are definitely more Russell than SJP.

Boot-elcious

chocci boots

Being an avid reader of British Country Living magazine and periodically fancying myself as a 'farm girl', I have been taken with the whimsical gumboot trend for sometime. British country girls have been sporting these 'wellies' for some years, apparently for tramping through hedgerows and gathering wildflowers (according to the publications's english rose models). Vintage Brit Cath Kidston stocks some snazzy ones just for this purpose and Tamara Henriques also has a stunning range.

Lo and behold we now have the groovy gumboots on our shores. In fact good old Target has these 'chocolates' boots on its shelves as we speak- for $29.95. I love the little adjustable strap at the side of these new age gumboots that seems to say, 'yes I am a gumboot but I have moved into the indoor chic boot world'.

All these outlandish boots really beg to be worn with any kind of fishnet or patterned tight and some sort of textured fabric short skirt. Top the outfit off with a cropped chunky knit, and your look has to be urban farm.

skulls and roses

Maybe you're more the Guns and Roses rock chick. If that's the case, these skulls and roses gumbies will be right up your alley - also at Target. The pair I am really coveting are these Paul Smith beauties on ebay right now.

I have to admit, despite my attraction I have not yet indulged in a pair for my own daily 'hedgerow tramp' through the supermarket, bank and school gate. This may be because I feel future conversations with friends may include comments like 'remember that tacky gumboot phase that was around last year?'
