This is the dress you'll be swanning about in this coming season. Well perhaps not this exact one, but a relative of this delightful frock family - the Tea Dress. Tea dresses have been out and about all Summer in the northern hemisphere and are continuing on in the Fall 2008 collections. The 2008 tea dress is styled along the lines of a 1940's vintage garden party dress, with a shorter hemline (knee and above - depending on your legs and age).
You'll know if you've spotted one, the fabric is light and floaty (designer labels in chiffon, Target in polyester) with a pretty all-over flower print. Anyone can throw on a tea dress and look great as the styling is complimentary to all manner of personal challenges: large arms (flattering sleeves), body bulges (floating fabric), stick insectness (waist shaping) and bland personality (loads of colour and flowers).
The exciting thing is, we can get right into these dresses now, even though it is so damn cold, because they look fantastic with black tights and cashmere cardigans or even the trusty DJ (denim jacket that is, not dept store). Depending how fashion brave you are, the tights can move into the chunky lace realm or even, dare I say it, the fishnets. (I know all this because over the weekend while attending my son's city adventure scouting excursion, instead of spotting noteable landmarks my focus was on urban fashionistas' dresses and tights).
To take this look one step further, cinch the dress in at the waist with a belt and you are literally the trendsetter of your pack.
So while the kettle boils and the Earl Grey steeps, here are some shoes to absorb - as these are absolutely necessary to complete the look.
