Go Gok!

After watching many a UK lass transformed from god-awful to OMG on How to Look Good Naked, there was no way I was going to miss Gok's flying visit to the local shopping hub.

For those who have not yet had the pleasure of Gok, his program is all about transforming women with less than perfect bodies into confident chics who are happy to strut their stuff on the catwalk - in just their undies mind you. He does all of this without a single nip or tuck but rather (in an extremely sensitive mannner) by skillfully getting inside their heads to alter self perception. Of course there is makeup, hair stylists and swish gear, but a lot of the work is centred on the woman's headspace.

To quote an ancient Helen Reddy anthem, Gok's 'wisdom is born of pain'. Growing up in the UK gay, asian and obese, and bullied as a result, he can obviously empathise with the poor body image individual. Fortunately, he managed to overcome his obstacles and if like me, you really need to know how, his autobiography 'Through thick and thin' is now available.

Those close to me know that watching a lively gaysian allude to his current sexpolits was a stellar effort on my part, but there is more to Gok than the obvious.

Whilst standing in this crowd of Melbournian females, all anxious to glean a pearl of Gok's body wisdom or to be selected for a makeover, I was struck by the overwhelming number of our beautiful young women who felt they 'didn't look good'. I noticed Gok shared similar thoughts to mine as he probed them with questions such as 'What is it about you that you don't like, you look great to me!' So it was with real relief when Q and A time came and a teen ventured "How can girls my age look cool without looking slutty?' that he responded, 'We have managed to take away much of the childhood of our young girls already so my advice my dear is minimal makeup and a lot less flesh.'

Thanks Auntie Gok.

Sensible Swimmers

It's not often (in fact unheard of) that a swimwear trend appears and you're immediately certain you'll look divine in it. Well suddenly here it is - the vintage swimdress - and it just shows if you wait around long enough, a fashion trend will reappear that you knew was right for you if only you lived in the era. All we have had to do is wait fifty years. The flattering 'swimdress' has returned, shielding innocent onlookers from belly bulge and (horror) pubic indiscretion.

Michael Kors

Of course, Michael Kors' version is very St Tropez/Resort, but that's usually the look we are trying to achieve when we are scooping dead beetles out of the skimmer box- isn't it? Perhaps in his wisdom, he designed the matching bag for scattering the dead on the garden bed.

Juicy Corture

If you can't bring yourself to sport the pious style, here is Juicy Couture's interpretation. Almost looks like a Victoria's Secret night ensemble (maybe you'll have two outfits in one).

Urban Outfitters

Of them all, I really think Urban Outfitters (above) have the look nailed. Vintage and polka dots - a match made in heaven!

Have fun flaunting yourself this summer and if you're concerned about the expense of new togs - consider the money you will be saving on Nair.

Fringe Benefit

February 27th 2009 10:24

I recently had a nice full fringe chopped back into place, and I must say it has had its benefits. It sits at eyelash length, so I can actually observe situations through it without it being obvious. More importantly though, any thoughts I may have had about botox are now redundant, as the fringe covers the furrows. But best of all, a (very astute) friend likened my look to Uma Thurman's character in Pulp Fiction,

pulp fiction

so now my dancing has improved, but I'm skipping the cocaine.

It seems many of the celebs have joined me in this hairstyle resurgance, even our australian icon Kylie.

And doesn't Keira Knightley look so sophisticated with hers.

A fringe doesn't need to be a grown up look either, as Katy Perry shows us with her punky version

katy

and Jessica Alba, makes her fringe a very 'all seasons' look.

A fringe is a very simple way to try a new look, because they can be grown out quickly. With today's look of layered swept to the side fringes, it is easy to make this transition. So if you feel like you need a new look for this season, this trend is certainly worth a try.

What the Foho?

August 22nd 2008 11:48
Boho Modern

The fashion buzz word that you're going to be hearing for quite some time is Foho. No, not Boho, apparently that's over now, but Foho. The term, coined by UK Telegraph journalist Clare Coulson, basically describes the new take on Boho, as a fusion of seventies folk with edgy current trends. Clare declares, 'Foho is about a more understated, eclectic mix, fusing classic Boho elements - Seventies silhouettes, crochet trims and trippy hippie prints - with more subtle folk pieces, such as washed-out denim and traditional embroideries. Crucially, it also throws in something modern like a great big shiny It-bag or über-cool trainers. It's cooler and far more authentic than Boho and owes more to the original folk look of the Seventies.' Got that? Ok if you're floundering a little, let's take a look at some of the key elements of Foho, so that you're clear about what to shop for
