Mix Maxi

Who would have thought it would get to the stage that you would be throwing a Maxi dress into the weekly grocery shop along with the cat food and the cornflakes? Well that time for me has arrived, as during my last trip to Coles I was confronted by an incredible range of bargain-priced, stylish clothing that created a huge diversion from the cereal and pet food aisles.

Mix apparel

Mix Apparel is a cheap and cheerful clothing range that Coles supermarkets have added to a select group of their stores. Fortunately, I happened upon a bit of a clearance day and managed these wardrobe additions:

mix tunic
$8 tunic/dress

mix dress

mix top
Bow detail on back $8

Clearance or not however, the prices don't seem to reach any higher than $29 on full-priced items, so we can't really do a lot of financial damage as we buy our weekly supplies ...can we?

The Mix range is definitely going to suit if you are a person who:
a) likes to pick up a pavlova and a dress to wear, on the way to the BBQ,
b) needs something clean to wear to work tomorrow and has no time left to put a load on, or
c) wants to experiment with a new trend ie maxi, ruffles, lace without spending a king's ransom.

Mix won't be for you if:
a) you aren't prepared to pull outfits over your clothing in public (there are no fitting rooms),
b) your idea of the height of social embarrassment is appearing next to someone in the same skirt, or
c) you're a close friend of Anna Wintour.

Happy Mixing!

Go Gok!

April 10th 2011 05:34
gok

After watching many a UK lass transformed from god-awful to OMG on How to Look Good Naked, there was no way I was going to miss Gok's flying visit to the local shopping hub.

For those who have not yet had the pleasure of Gok, his program is all about transforming women with less than perfect bodies into confident chics who are happy to strut their stuff on the catwalk - in just their undies mind you. He does all of this without a single nip or tuck but rather (in an extremely sensitive mannner) by skillfully getting inside their heads to alter self perception. Of course there is makeup, hair stylists and swish gear, but a lot of the work is centred on the woman's headspace.

gok girls

To quote an ancient Helen Reddy anthem, Gok's 'wisdom is born of pain'. Growing up in the UK gay, asian and obese, and bullied as a result, he can obviously empathise with the poor body image individual. Fortunately, he managed to overcome his obstacles and if like me, you really need to know how, his autobiography 'Through thick and thin' is now available.

gok's book

Those close to me know that watching a lively gaysian allude to his current sexpolits was a stellar effort on my part, but there is more to Gok than the obvious.

Whilst standing in this crowd of Melbournian females, all anxious to glean a pearl of Gok's body wisdom or to be selected for a makeover, I was struck by the overwhelming number of our beautiful young women who felt they 'didn't look good'. I noticed Gok shared similar thoughts to mine as he probed them with questions such as 'What is it about you that you don't like, you look great to me!' So it was with real relief when Q and A time came and a teen ventured "How can girls my age look cool without looking slutty?' that he responded, 'We have managed to take away much of the childhood of our young girls already so my advice my dear is minimal makeup and a lot less flesh.'

Thanks Auntie Gok.

Thin Lizzy

Not usually one to be lured by info-mercials - I was lured. It may not have come to your attention yet, but there is a one stop make-up product on the market that really is good - Thin Lizzy

models

As this strip of images shows, it does six things, thus replacing a bulging bag of past their use by date cosmetics that like me, I'm sure is nesting in your bathroom drawer.

At the horror of my children, who thought I was well above the 'Sham-Wow' style advertising influence, I purchased Thin Lizzy online. The selling point for me was really replacing all of the overwhelming makeup products I have accumulated over the years and being able to tote around my makeup in my handbag.

For $49.95 plus p&h my TL makeup arrived. It came with eyeliner and lipgloss. But wait, there was more - 2 entire sets of it all.

To be honest, it has taken a couple of weeks to get the balance of the bronzer right, but overall, getting my makeup on in the morning is much quicker, looks more natural and because it all fits in my bag, it's easy to reapply when I'm out.

Go to www.thinlizzy.com.au watch the clip and see what you think.

They're back. But before you roll your eyes (or ankles), look here. Clogs may have resurfaced, but their latest incarnations are quite cute. Still not sure, well check out the interpretations from Steve Madden

Sensible Swimmers

It's not often (in fact unheard of) that a swimwear trend appears and you're immediately certain you'll look divine in it. Well suddenly here it is - the vintage swimdress - and it just shows if you wait around long enough, a fashion trend will reappear that you knew was right for you if only you lived in the era. All we have had to do is wait fifty years. The flattering 'swimdress' has returned, shielding innocent onlookers from belly bulge and (horror) pubic indiscretion

Sometimes a hat is too much. However, plain old hair just doesn't seem right with the lovely 50's inspired floral dresses that are all about this summer. For those of you who lie awake at night and ponder this fashion dilemma, there is a solution - glammed-up hair combs

In my usual manner of finding something with a history to make a part of my future, this season I have rediscovered the beauty of vintage costume jewellery. It's not hard to uncover, in fact I'm sure most of us have bits and pieces entiwined around each other at the bottom of our faithful old jewellery boxes. Now is the time to go and see what you have
